HIST 2700: U.S. History to 1877

In this class, we were assigned the choice of historical documents to analyze. My choice was on a French-born immigrant’s interpretation of the New Nation, America. J. Hector John de Crevecoeur's What Is an American is letter III in his published experience. Letters from an American Farmer is Crevecoeur's signature in history. What is an American? was my document analysis essay and my signature assignment for history 2700.

                                                        "What is an American?” Reflection

This assignment was my first writing assignment in my new schooling adventure. I found Crevecoeur to be very exciting to read. I now see how we arrived in one Nation under God, and how we grew to the great nation we are today. For me, he put the life of an American in 1782 in to perspective. In my attempt to analyze his writing, I found that it was his attempt to incite the Europeans-- mostly the English. He uses drastic examples in land-ownership that contrasted to that of Europe. Crevecoeur disliked the oppression that radiated from Europe.

This assignment refreshed my mind on the fact; we all unite in this beautiful land. It does not matter where we come from, what religion, or what political movement we may or may not be affiliated. Of course, we only unite in the face of certain doom, take for example, nine –eleven. Furthermore, most of us were born in America. On the other hand, we are all refuges trying to strive and break from our own type of oppression. The American dream lives on.
