The Path of an Immigrant
My perception of immigrants previously was dark and not accepting. Perhaps, I was even xenophobic and ethnocentric. I used to think that immigrates came to America to run from trouble, or to take our jobs and send money back to support drug cartels. I also assumed that immigrants had no feelings or sensitivity toward others.
After the interview with an immigrant. I now understand that immigrant feelings are forced out of them through years of dehumanizing conditions. Generally, most immigrants are actually here because they care. Like the lady I interviewed immigrants are here because they have the right to survive. Moreover, they are here in an attempt to provide a positive future for their loved ones that are left behind.
I understand that we need to be open to immigrants. As born citizens we owe immigrants support with conversation and tools that are beneficial to their livelihood. Furthermore, we owe immigrants a safe accepting environment. This project opened my eyes to cultural sensitivity. I will try my hardest to not pass judgement. I want approach ever new person with an open mind. My intentions will be understand others individual standpoint.
